Qi Gong and Tai Chi
Qi Gong is a form of therapeutic exercise used in TCM to enhance the body's vital energy. Many health benefits are achieved through exercise - particularly an increase in the body's blood and energy flow. As a result, physical and emotional vitality is improved. The practice of Qi Gong is particularly helpful in the treatment of respiratory and digestive ailments, circulatory system dysfunction, urinary and reproductive system diseases, rheumatic and arthritic pain, ear, nose and throat problems, and depression or anxiety.
Qi Gong classes are held every Saturday morning at the Royal Canadian Legion Crescent Beach Branch and weekday mornings in White Rock. Please see below for details or contact our clinic.
The Ancient Art of Qi Gong
The concept of Qi has been part of Chinese culture for thousands of years and is not limited to the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Martial arts, meditation, visual arts and philosophical/religious literature such as Lao-tsu's Tao Te Ching and the Book of Changes or I Ching, have all utilized and embodied the cultivation and use of Qi. When Bodhidharma, the 28th Patriarch of Buddhism went to China in the 6th Century to spread Buddhism, many parts of Daoism, Buddhism and Confucianism became fused but the practice of Qi Gong and Zen Buddhism became synonymous with the Shaolin monks.
Two styles of Qi Gong are practiced on Saturday morning at 9:30 am until 11 am. The Qi Gong styles practiced are “Recuperating Life”, which is a series of 24 moves done in sequence. The Recuperating Life style of Qi Gong contains many dao yin or original animal postures practiced for over two thousand years. Shaolin Qi Gong, the other form practiced, is called “Nei Jing Yi Zhi Chan” or One Finger Zen. These are standing postures using hand mudras, similar to the hand positions seen in early Buddhist yogic practices. The Saturday class is held at the Royal Canadian Legion Crescent Beach Branch located at 2643 128th Street Surrey and the drop-in fee is $5.
Rod also teaches a more condensed class are from Tuesday to Thursday mornings, from 8:00 until 8:45 am. This class is held at his clinic at Five Corners in White Rock. If you are interested in this complementary class, simply come to the clinic at 8 am and begin the day revived and in balance.
Rod is currently practicing with Zhang, Jing Fa who comes from Shanghai, where he practiced with the famous Qi Gong master Que, A Shui in the 1960’s, and with a Tibetan monk by the name of Qing Ding.
