Traditional Chinese Medicine Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a non-invasive approach to maintaining good health and preventing illness. Health is viewed as a balanced and harmonious state of body, mind and spirit. TCM has been successfully practiced for over 4,000 years and is clinically proven to treat a wide range of diseases and ailments. TCM includes acupuncture, herbal medicine, massage, therapeutic exercise and diet. Doctors of TCM Doctors of TCM are trained to recognize the initial stages of disease - often long before the patient is aware of any illness. By understanding the relationship between the body and our emotional and physical environments, they focus not only on treating illness - but also preventing it. Doctors of TCM are trained in the application of acupuncture, herbal medicine, massage and therapeutic exercise to treat disease and improve overall health and well being. In British Columbia, only those who have met the requirements of education and competency standards regulated by the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine can be designated as Doctors of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Other Professional Designations A TCMP is a Traditional Chinese Medical Practitioner who can practice Acupuncture and Herbal medicine, but has not earned complete certification for the title of Dr.TCM. R.Ac denotes a Registered Acupuncturist and does not dispense Herbal formulas. R.Hb denotes a Registered Herbologist who may dispense herbs but does not practice Acupuncture. It is advisable to be wary of practitioners not licensed in at least one of the categories above.
